Herbert Ashwin Budd

Portrait of the British artist Herbert Ashwin Budd (1881–1950), renowned painter and London Transport poster designer.Herbert Ashwin Budd was a British painter, mural decorator, teacher, designer and First World War camouflage artist whose career spanned more than four decades. Best known for his portraits, figure compositions, landscapes, London scenes and poster designs, he exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy and became one of the most accomplished artists to emerge from the Staffordshire Potteries.

Born on 10 January 1881 at Ford Green, Smallthorne, Staffordshire, Herbert Ashwin Budd was the only son of Thomas Budd and Henrietta Octavia Ashwin.[1][2] He was baptised at Norton-le-Moors on 27 March 1881 and spent his childhood in North Staffordshire before entering employment as an apprentice lithographer.[2][3][4][5]

While working in Staffordshire, Budd attended Hanley School of Art where his talent quickly gained recognition. In March 1903, the Staffordshire Sentinel described him as being "skilled both as painter and designer" and identified him as one of the school's most promising students.[14] The following year he won two King's Prizes, including one for drawing the antique figure from memory, and was awarded a Royal Exhibition Scholarship to the Royal College of Art, South Kensington.[15] Contemporary reports recorded that he achieved one of the highest positions in the country in national art examinations.[15]

Budd's success continued at the Royal College of Art. In 1906 the Staffordshire Sentinel reported that his scholarship had been extended because of his progress and achievements.[16] A further report in 1907 described him as a Royal Exhibitioner making excellent progress in London.[17] In 1908 he won prizes at the Royal College of Art Sketching Club exhibition, where his work was praised for its treatment of wave movement, colour and atmosphere.[18]

His emergence as a professional artist was confirmed in 1910 when two paintings, A Morning Walk and At the Door, were accepted for exhibition at the Royal Academy.[19] This marked the beginning of an exhibiting career that would continue for approximately forty years. During this period he exhibited portraits, figure compositions, landscapes, decorative subjects and scenes of modern London.[25]

The First World War interrupted the early stages of Budd's artistic career. Royal Academy catalogues identify him as "H. A. Budd, L/Cpl., R.E.", indicating service as a Lance Corporal in the Royal Engineers.[25] His Medal Index Card confirms military service during the conflict.[11] Evidence suggests that he was involved in military camouflage work. In 1919 three paintings—The Yard, Camouflage Dump, Abbeville; L. V. Symington, Esq. (Late Capt. R.E.); and Le Camouflage Anglaise—were exhibited in Works by Camoufleur Artists with Examples of Camouflage.[26]

On 29 May 1915 Budd married fellow artist Helen Margaret MacKenzie at St Luke's Church, Chelsea.[7] The couple spent much of their married life in Chelsea and Kensington, where electoral registers, census returns and the 1939 Register record them at various addresses including King's Road, Trafalgar Square, Beaufort Mansions and Avenue Studios.[8][9][10]

Following the war Budd developed a successful dual career as both artist and teacher. In 1921 he became a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters.[27] He taught at St Martin's School of Art and was also associated with Bromley School of Art, where a contemporary newspaper report identified him as Painting Master.[20]

A profile published in the Daily Mirror in 1934 described Budd as a painter of London scenes, portraits, decorative subjects and murals.[21] The article stated that he had served in France during the war years and referred to his painting Rations Up, Rest Billets in France, which was then in the collection of the Imperial War Museum.[21][28] Budd also assisted Professor Gerald Moira on important mural schemes and, during the 1930s, produced poster designs for London Transport.[23][24][29]

Among the works for which he became particularly known were The Bird Shop, Flower Sellers, Piccadilly Circus, The Artist's Model, War Workers, View on the Churnet and numerous landscapes and decorative compositions.[21][22] He maintained a studio in King's Road, Chelsea, was a member of the Chelsea Arts Club, and regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Paris Salon and other important exhibitions.[21][23][24]

Herbert Ashwin Budd died on 3 June 1950 at 10 Avenue Studios, Sydney Mews, Kensington, aged sixty-nine.[12][13] Contemporary newspaper reports noted that he had come from the Potteries to Chelsea nearly fifty years earlier to pursue an artistic career.[22] He was survived by his widow Helen, herself an accomplished artist.[22]

In April 1951 a memorial exhibition of Budd's work was held at Hanley Museum and Art Gallery.[23][24] Organised by his widow, the exhibition brought together more than fifty paintings, drawings and lithographs, including works loaned by the Imperial War Museum and municipal galleries.[24] The exhibition was opened by the sculptor Sir Charles Wheeler R.A., who paid tribute to Budd's artistic achievements and personal character.[24]

Today Budd's work is represented in public collections including the Imperial War Museum, the Potteries Museum & Art Gallery, the National Portrait Gallery and other institutions. His career encompassed painting, teaching, mural decoration, military camouflage and poster design, leaving a significant artistic legacy within British twentieth-century art.[28][30]
