Notes:
Buxted is a parish in the Wealden District, just north of Uckfield. Tributaries of the river Rother and the river Cuckmere run through it and were important to the iron industry that developed there.
Buxted was heavily involved in the iron industry, with the first blast furnace being created around 1491. Ralph Hogge was a well-known iron founder and owned Hogge House, which bears a stone carved with the figure of a hog, dated 1581. Edmund Teesdale, who lived at Hogge House between 1967 and 1996, published a biography of Ralph Hogge titled ‘The Queen’s Gunstonemaker’ in 1984.
Buxted formed part of the great manor of South Malling, which was granted to the archbishops of Canterbury before the Norman conquest and remained in their possession, run as a secular lordship, until the 16th century. The manor, which stretched from Lewes Bridge up to the Kent border at Lamberhurst, was then broken up into three new lordships – the manors of Ringmer, Framfield and Mayfield. Buxted formed part of the manor of Framfield. Two independent manorial islands existed within Buxted – a manor of Shodwell, controlling land in the region of High Hurstwood, and the manor of Buxted itself.
The lords of the manor of Glynde, also part of South Malling, claimed authority over the manor at Buxted. In 1613 Anthony Morley, the lord of Glynde, was ordered to release his claim, and pay £140 to Saintmount Wells, the lord of Buxted, as compensation for the injuries done to his estate during his minority. Between 1651 and 1658 the estate got into huge debt on account of the involvement of its owner Stephen Penkhurst of Mayfield in the iron industry. In 1712, by a deft piece of investment which was his hallmark, Thomas Medley of Barcombe took on some of the debt in return for a mortgage; by 1724 he had acquired the whole estate. In 1743 Jeremiah Milles, engaged on an antiquarian tour of Sussex, and recorded that Mr Medley is building a fine seat at a place called Buxted. The East Hoathly diarist Thomas Turner visited in 1756 – We see the gardens and the outside of the place, neither of which is any ways near completed, but I think when they are both finished they will both be very curious in their kind.
The estate then descended through the female line; among its owners was Charles Jenkinson, the Earl of Liverpool and prime minster. In 1940 a fire destroyed the much of the house, which was purchased and restored by the architect Basil Ionides.
As well as the estate archive, The Keep holds a magnificent Buxted Estate Survey, carried out in 1798 showing houses and farms. At that date, the church was surrounded by houses, all of which had been swept away by 1840.
St Margaret’s Church is of medieval origin. Its earliest features, the tower and south arcade, date from the end of the 13th century. Developments and changes to the church have taken place throughout the following centuries, as can be seen through the number of paintings collected from 1920-1967. Until 1846, Uckfield was officially a chapelry of Buxted, but had its own church from the medieval period; its registers begin in 1538. The ecclesiastical parish of St Mary Buxted was created in 1885 from the ancient parish of Buxted, partly influenced by the clearance of the houses in the park. The church was consecrated by the Bishop of Chichester on 11 June 1887.
